PS VR

Impressions Of PlayStation VR So Far – A Game-Changer?

I was lucky enough to have Santa bring me a shiny new PlayStation VR (version 2 – CUH-ZVR2) this Christmas. It’s an experience I’ve wanted to try for some time but, for multiple reasons, I’ve just not got around to it. So yes, like many, I’m late to the VR game, but I believe now is as good a time as any to jump in. It’s Christmas after all, there’s nothing to do outside right? With that said, reader, here are my impressions of PS VR so far.

PS VR – Setting It Up

PS VR Setup

From the clear and informative packaging alone, there’s no mistaking that Sony has thought this whole endeavour through to a serious degree. The PS VR is accompanied with a step-by-step guide to setting it all up. It’s a process that perhaps takes slightly longer than getting your average console up and running for the first time but is simple nonetheless. Most evidently, the company have prioritised ease of use for those that are new to the concept of virtual reality, replicating its welcoming price point compared to others in the market.

The core design follows these same fundamentals. The PS VR looks sleek and remains accessible – stylish, but practical. It’s also comfortable to wear and can be adjusted to fit a wide array of different head sizes. Glasses-wearers need not fear either: the VR headset will have no trouble accommodating you.

In terms of the changes from CUH-ZVR1, the first model released, we’re basically looking at an easier, slightly tidier setup. The revised headset features a dedicated place to store your stereo headphones (that come in the box). We also see smaller more shrunken cables, a refined processor unit, and last but not least, HDR pass-through. The pass-through is great for 4K TV users who don’t want to keep switching and crossing their wires to achieve that extra colour range, but it won’t mean much for everyone else.

Once you’ve fixed the headset to your noggin, the camera is correctly facing you, and you’ve got your controller in hand, it’s on to the Virtual Reality experience itself. What to try first then? My bundle included PlayStation VR Worlds, a good starting point to begin the build-up to VR tolerance.

The VR Journey Begins

VR Worlds starts with a glowing orb flying in circular strokes in the room you now find yourself. You can move your head, impressively, in a 360-degree rotation and see the room light up as you follow this orb. After that’s ended, it’s time to choose your first VR experience from the selection. I chose a deep sea descent that promised I would meet an angry shark. I was feeling brave, you see.

Now in a mini-sub, the descent began. The further down we went, the more I started to appreciate the VR effect in front of me. Deep, striking blues filled my vision while scared fish swam in the other direction. We were entering their territory, clearly. Flora and fauna coalesced back and forth as the sub continued to descend. Suddenly, I’m being told that something has been detected on the underwater radar – can you guess? I look up and there’s a huge, menacing shadow approaching.

PS VR - Shark

I now find myself face-to-face with a great white shark. The shark bites at the front of the sub trying to break its way in. It looks, at times, completely real to me. Frightening, sinister, but hugely exciting, the adrenaline is pumping. I’m told the dive has gone wrong and they’re going to try and rescue me. Then I’m being yanked back to the top as the shark continues its relentless and vicious assault. Luckily, we manage to escape its domain and make it back to the top. I’m safe and sound and my first PS VR experience is over. It flashed past so quickly, yet all I’m thinking is: what’s next?

Real Or Not? That Is The Question

Back to the menu of VR Worlds, I picked an experience decidedly different from my first. Welcome to The London Heist. Forget the delicious and aforementioned blues of the sea, I’m now in a foreboding garage and a large, bald, towering man is shouting at me while I’m strapped to a chair. The heist has gone wrong and I’m to blame apparently. He’s now staring directly at me, and it’s pretty uncanny. This guy looks real, yet I have to keep telling myself he’s not. This is VR working, and frankly, at times, it’s incredible.

Fast forward ahead and I’m shooting guys off bikes with an automatic during an epic chase scene, and then I’m in that garage again, getting abused and beaten up by my old friend. One section in particular (near the end), where a different individual lunged at me with a knife, had me recoiling back to protect myself. I almost felt where the knife landed in my stomach. What are you doing? It’s not real. Or is it?

And that, readers, was my first time using the PS VR headset. To answer a burning question: I didn’t experience any lasting motion sickness other than my first minute or two and was simply left wanting more. At this early point in time, I’m really impressed with the ease of use of the device, the memorable journeys I’ve already had and the level of realism being produced from what is, arguably, a more ‘budget’ VR headset. Sony is right when they say you need to try the headset on before you make your judgement – it isn’t just clever marketing.

So, game-changing? From what I’ve seen so far, it could well be the start of the next revolution to come.

The developers of indie game The Curious Expedition have released the game’s content for free on open-source platform GitHub.

The Curious Expedition – Pixel Art For All

This new release from developer Maschinen-Mensch includes all the image files of the game which has become noted for its dazzling pixel art style.

Maschinen-Mensch’s co-founder, Johannes Kristmann, said:

Johannes Kristmann

“We have been successful with the game beyond our hopes and now want to give something back to the creative game development community. This is why we have decided to release our game’s content as open-source.

We would like to encourage you to use the many image files for your own prototypes or gamejams. Your usage of our content can be completely unrelated to modding The Curious Expedition, as long as you adhere to the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 license”.

The release includes full modding support and Steam Workshop integration as well. With the available image and script files, remixing and creating new content for the game should prove to be an entertaining project.

Together with famous historical personalities, players venture out on expeditions to regions never explored before for fame, science and even some treasure. You can see it in action below:

Nantucket

Seafaring strategy game Nantucket announced for PC

Picaresque Studio is bringing us Nantucket, a seafaring strategy game based on Moby Dick, on January 18th next year.

Nantucket – Captain Ahab & The Pequod

Set in the golden era of American whaling in the early 19th century, Nantucket takes place shortly after the events in the Pequod, where Captain Ahab and his crew lost their lives to Moby Dick. Surely that’s not a spoiler, now?

As Ishmael, the sole survivor of the Pequod, you’ll explore the seven seas, captain your ship, fight pirates and hunt whales, whilst on the lookout for your old foe, Moby Dick of course, in search of the ultimate redemption.

The announcement trailer can be found below, with some live action scenes included, because why not:

Here’s some extra gameplay from the developer themselves:

Marco Mantoan, Designer at Picaresque Studio, had this to say:

“Since the original Steam Greenlight, we’ve been developing a game we feel is unique in its setting, a love letter to Moby Dick and the strategy genre. We’re excited to be working with Fish Eagle, utilising its international expertise to help us bring Nantucket to more fans around the world.”

You’ll be able to pick up Nantucket on PC via Steam very soon. Moby Dick fans: is this what you’ve been waiting for? Let us know below!

Code Vein

Check out Code Vein’s new trailer for PS4, XB1 and PC

Code Vein Trailer – Life Essence Void

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia and there are abilities you can acquire through ‘gifts’ from the consumption of blood.

The trailer for the Dark Souls-like action title features some new gameplay mixed with anime scenes and a rocking “Underworld” theme by VAMPS:

Code Vein features a story-driven dungeon experience where you can create your own character and choose your partner as you venture out into a world that’s full of destruction. Did we mention that it’s overun by a ‘friendly’ group called The Lost?

You can also change the feel of the game depending on which partner you choose, each with their own combat style and background story. In conclusion – you’ll be able to asborb blood sometime next year.

Latest Nintendo Switch Sales

The latest Nintendo Switch sales: 10 million worldwide

Switch sales have hit an impressive 10 million worldwide in just nine months.

Latest Nintendo Switch Sales – Switching It Up

The Nintendo Switch has almost beaten the Wii U’s total lifetime sales (13.56m). Let that sink in for a moment. That’s nine months vs five years on sale. In fact, the total number is very similar to the PS4’s first nine months on sale, and we know how well that’s doing.

There’s a serious chance then, that the Switch will outsell the Wii U in a single year – such is the pace of the ongoing sales.

Nintendo, as you can imagine, is pleased with the news and posted this charming tweet:

Next year the Switch will bring with it a new Yoshi game, a new Kirby game, a new Pokémon game, Bayonetta 3 (probably), Metroid Prime 4 (probably), we imagine more impressive indie titles, and hopefully, a few surprises to keep the momentum going. A new Star Fox game we can be proud of would be nice too – sorry Miyamoto!

Crowdfunded Battalion 1944 gets a pre-announcement trailer

Early in 2016 Bulkhead Interactive ran a Kickstarter for Battalion 1944.  Within three days the game was funded and more money was raised, hitting multiple stretch goals that include more maps. Now the ‘true successor to classic shooters’ has a pre-announcement trailer.

The five and a half minute video talks about the development and shows off the artwork. There is much on it being a classic shooter and ‘going back to what made games great’ while discussing the process they have gone through in order to make Battalion 1944 just those things.

The official trailer comes out January 9th with the game hitting Steam Early Access soon after, according to Bulkhead. It will go for $14.99, less than the smallest Kickstarter pledge. Because of this backers will get “skins”, cosmetics and vanity-focused loot crates.

Bulkhead stated that Battalion is expected to stay in Early Access for around a year. When it moves onto a full release the price will increase and the cheaper entry fee is to reward those who stayed with the company and the game. As an added bonus, all DLC will be free.

Mini Wheels

Mini Wheels announced – story-driven karting anyone?

The developers of the newly announced Mini Wheels asked a question: if you could change one thing about Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing, what would it be?

There was response was adding a single-player mode with a meaningful story:

“What if we combined the best elements from the classic karting games to make our game even more fun and added an engaging story on top of it?”

So meet Mini Wheels, a story-driven karting game, which lets you help a lost toy trapped in a basement of a suburban house – Pipo – find a way back into his owner’s hands.

Here’s the first trailer:

The developer has promised that Mini Wheels will also include 4 game modes: Racing, Capture the Flag, Burnout and Boss Battle and customizable karts.

It’s set to launch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2018.

New game titles land on streaming service PlayStation Now

Sony has announced that they are adding new game titles to their PlayStation Now game streaming subscription service.

PS Now – The Netflix Of Gaming? Not Quite.

The PS Now streaming service hasn’t seen a huge response from gamers and the games industry alike, but that isn’t stopping Sony from trying to bolster the collection of games available on it.

Here are the new titles being added:

  • Dishonored
  • Sparkle 2
  • Tennis In The Face
  • Mousecraft
  • Pang Adventures
  • Krinkle Krusher
  • Super Exploding Zoo!
  • Don’t Die, Mr. Robot!
  • Atari Flashback Classics Vol 1

At the time of writing, there are over 450 games available, these are mostly PS3 titles but include a smattering of PS4 games on the service too.

Notable additions include The Last of Us, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and Killzone Shadow Fall; while blockbuster hits like Red Dead Redemption, Batman: Arkham City and WWE 2K16 can also be found. Family-friendly titles include the LEGO Movie Videogame, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, and Tearaway Unfolded.

In case you didn’t know, PS Now enables you to stream games without game downloads, installs, or patches as well as save game progress in the PS Now cloud save storage. It’s a good idea hindered, we believe, by internet speeds that are still a little too far behind for that seamless experience.

If you reckon your internet is up to the task, however, you can grab a PS Now seven day free trial here. The monthly subscription is available for a costly 12.99 GBP per month.

Latest UK game charts – Call of Duty WWII at one, Odyssey moves up

The latest UK charts are here and Call of Duty WWII hasn’t budged – again. It seems it will be this way up until Christmas…

Latest UK Game Charts

The rest of the UK charts see FIFA 18 take second place, with Star Wars Battlefront 2 now in third, Super Mario Odyssey moves up to fourth and Assassin’s Creed Origins stays in fifth.

Here’s the full Top 20 list:

Sales as a whole went down even further this week and dropped an impressive 41 percent. Things are definitely slowing down then.

It’s also worth noting that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has left the list already – a little disappointing for the RPG epic. Although Odyssey saw a resurgence and went up to fourth.

Meanwhile The Sims 4 shot up 9 places. The demand is there, despite it being three years since its initial release on PC.

Devil May Cry HD collection coming in 2018

Capcom has announced that Devil May Cry is getting an HD collection on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC coming on March 13th, 2018. The collection will include Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awaking Special Edition.

In 2012 Capcom released something similar to this for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as you can see below:

Devil May Cry 4 and DmC: Devil May Cry (the prequel) were re-released in 2015 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The announcement of the HD collection comes as detailed rumours have hit the web about a possible fifth instalment of the series.

The collection is set to be listed at $29.99.
