E3 2017: Switch version of Skyrim features a few treats for Nintendo fans

Need an extra reason to play Skyrim on your Switch? Bethesda has you covered, as they showed via a new trailer at their E3 conference.

The Switch edition of Skyrim will feature the Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda, along with Link’s blue tunic from Breath of the Wild. Amiibo support is also available; it looks like you can summon special treasure chests to help you out in battle with the figures.

Screenshot_1Motion control via the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers is also shown off. We see the player use a sword and shield and then a bow and arrow, all seemingly activated by moving your hands about. Great – if it all works as fluidly as shown! (Although I can’t imagine doing this in bed).

No further details surfaced though, such as a release date or price. Is Nintendo saving the rest for their E3 conference? We’ll find out tomorrow.

Will you be buying Skyrim on the Switch? Let us know in the comments below!

Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition now coming to Switch as well as Wii U, PS4 and PS Vita

Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition is now coming to the Switch (awesome!), alongside the Wii U, PS4 and Vita versions.

The Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition will include the following:

  • An exclusive 2 Player Productions documentary about Thomas Happ and the making of Axiom Verge
  • A copy of the game
  • A deluxe booklet with developer commentary and art
  • A double-sided poster
  • If you pre-order before release, you will receive a CD soundtrack as well (available only for the Switch)

Developer Thomas Happ had this to say:

People often asked me about the early days of Axiom Verge – about how I was able to make a game completely on my own over the course of 5 years of evenings and weekends while holding down a full-time job. The long form documentary format really made it possible for me to take the time and explain that process as well as go into some detail about the difficulties of balancing work and family responsibilities.

You can watch the trailer below – which console will you be buying the game for? For me it has to be the Switch. Let us know in the comments below!

Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot HD, out tomorrow on the Wii U eShop

Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot HD (that’s the full title folks!) is coming to the Wii U eShop tomorrow – for both the US and Europe.

The basic idea of the musical platformer? Game developer CoderChild (a former Ubisoft programmer who decided to go it alone) explains with some enthusiasm:

With only one button to jump, you must help Cubit to go from platform to platform, while you avoid obstacles and enemies through the different scenes of the game.

Perhaps you think this makes this game not difficult, right? Well, you are right; this game is not difficult… this game is Hardcore! Choose the path you want to do in each game and reach each of the 3 endings available!!

Some of the key features of the game include:

  • Guest characters from other videogames
  • 3 different endings
  • 4 game modes
  • A dedicated 2 player mode
  • A soundtrack that will send you back to the dance floor! (intriguing)
  • 22 challenges to beat

Our thoughts

Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot HD certainly looks like a lot of fun, especially if you’re into rhythm-platforming games. There seems to be some meat to the bones here as well, with quite a lot of content in the package.

Check out the trailer below to get a taste of what it’s all about. Will you be trying this one out? Or is your Wii U covered in dust and hidden away? Let us know!

Sony: Switch is a “great success”, PlayStation and Nintendo sit side-by-side

In an interview with Time Magazine, Sony’s Shawn Layden was asked what he thought about the Nintendo Switch. He had this to say about the hybrid machine:

It’s a great success for Nintendo. It’s definitely what that fanbase has been waiting for.

Asked whether he thought the Switch would detract from Sony’s ongoing success, Layden said he believes that the two consoles in fact compliment each other quite nicely:

When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side.

Well there you go. The days of console manufacturers bashing one another senseless seem to be coming to a swift end. Is the games industry finally maturing? It would appear so.

On that topic, what consoles do you own? Are you a PlayStation-Nintendo gamer? Maybe you buy all of them? Let us know in the comments below!

Nintendo unexpectedly reveals online paid service details for Switch – here’s a summary of what’s coming

Nintendo has unexpectedly revealed more details about its paid online service for the Switch that was originally set to launch this year. Here’s a summary of the new plans:

  • The paid service will now launch in 2018, meaning online is free for the rest of the year (hooray)
  • Allows you to play compatible co-op and competitive games online
  • Online lobby and voice chat through a mobile app
  • A free, limited version of the mobile app will be available for download in summer 2017
  • Features a ‘Classic Game Selection’ for subscribers, these are classic titles with added online play, including Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario – it works like Netflix, with unlimited access to the games as long as you’re a subscriber
  • Special offers for subscribers such as discounts on select digital games and content
  • The service is only available on the Switch, and it will not come to the Wii U and 3DS
  • The official pricing can be found below, being much fairer than many suspected:

Our first thoughts?

Nintendo has clearly changed things for the better here, with a Netflix-style games service at a price many didn’t expect. It seems the negative feedback to their original plans has carried some serious weight. Although we’re still not sure about using a mobile app for online play. Maybe we can expect further details at E3? Stay tuned.

Action RPG Indivisible now coming to Switch as well

The Switch gets another indie game confirmed for it this week: Indivisible, an action RPG from developer Lab Zero Games.

Indivisible was originally scheduled to be released on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, but the Switch has now joined the line-up as well.

The game follows Ajna, a girl who sets out on a ‘globe-spanning journey’ to discover the truth behind her mysterious powers. Why has she been granted such powers? What is her true purpose? That’s where we, the players, come in.

There’s quite a lot of choice when it comes to buying the game

The game is certainly stylish, and this writer can imagine it looking rather sumptuous on the Switch’s 720p screen. Unfortunately, we’ll be waiting until next year for this one.

For now, why not check out the trailer below and let us know what you think about it.

Sonic Mania release date announced with new trailer

The return of a classic 2D Sonic the Hedgehog platformer will make its long-awaited debut later this summer and the new trailer from SEGA shows off what we’ve been waiting for. Returning to its roots in 16-bit form, Sonic Mania shows off nostalgic presence for many who (like myself) poured hours into the early Sonic games of the Genesis era.

High demand for the Sonic team to put together a game bringing gamers back to the classic era has been circulating for quite some time, even after the sub-par release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 episodes. With HD graphics complimenting the 2D side-scroller, the mechanics never quite met the expectations of the eager fan base.

SEGA listened and now we’re just a couple of months away from what could be the Sonic fans’ answer to the hopeful return to 16-bit form. Excelling through re-imagined familiar levels like Flying Battery Zone from Sonic & Knuckles, Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the original classic Green Hill Zone from the first title in the series, there’s also new levels to experience as one of the three faces of the franchise – Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. Pushing 60 FPS, Sonic Mania comes with powerful bosses and surprises and an adventure to put a stop to Dr. Eggman’s evil robots.

The new Sonic Mania pre-order trailer gives us a taste of brand new levels mixed with old classics from the games that started it all for the “blue blur”, along with its digital release coming this August 15th to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Releasing later this year is a new 3D Sonic title, Sonic Forces, coming to the same consoles as well.

Tokyo RPG Factory’s Lost Sphear Announced for PS4, Switch and PC

Meet Lost Sphear, a JRPG from the creators of I Am Setsuna that’s coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in early 2018.

Tokyo RPG Factory’s new game takes place in a world where people are inexplicably vanishing. Loved ones are no longer there. The flowers are fading, and the world is turning cold. What’s causing this? That’s where you, a young boy named Kanata, come in.

Sounds intriguing enough to this writer. Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Monster Hunter XX is Coming to Nintendo Switch

Capcom have announced that Monster Hunter XX is heading to the Nintendo Switch, in Japan at least, on the 25th August.

The new trailer shows off some gameplay on the Switch while undocked, and then docked, driving home the message that you’ll be able to play the game anywhere.

Monster Hunter is a huge series in Japan and has sold very well indeed on the 3DS. The fact that Capcom has therefore chosen to support the Switch doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Still, it’s nice to see them bring some proper content (Ultra Street Fighter 2…) to the hybrid machine.

We expect to hear more about the game at E3, with a western release almost a certainty. Check out the announcement (in Japanese) below.

Nintendo Switch Selling Faster Than The Wii

It’s not been surprising to see the Nintendo Switch atop the hardware charts lately. It’s a new system that’s competing against consoles that are relatively old and suffer from fragmented fan bases thanks to the PS4 Pro, Xbox Scorpio and the many versions of the 3DS/2DS that exist.

What did cause me some surprise and prompted me to write a news post was this report from Gamestop via PVPLive. The fact that Switch sales are doing 10% better than Wii sales were at the same period after their launches.

Sure, we’ve all seen posts about ‘Better launch weekends’ before, but I paid them no mind as launch weekend figures can be skewed by all sorts of marketing and manufacturing issues. We all know that ‘most’ consoles ‘sell out’ on their launch but what we often don’t know is if this is down to a huge demand or an extreme lack of supply.

With the initial rush out-of-the-way, the Switch has earned some impressive sales figures and the fact it’s selling faster than the Wii is pretty staggering – especially when you consider the fact that most people who don’t play games haven’t even heard of the Switch.

I’ve experienced this first-hand when talking about what I’m up to these days. My friends know I play video games and out of sheer politeness, they’ll enquire about my hobbies. I mention that I’m looking forward to eventually getting my hands on a Switch when I can and they look at me blankly.

Polygon even reported that the Switch is actually struggling to obtain brand recognition with ‘non-gamers’, with polls showing that only 7% of respondents who identify as ‘non-gamers’ have even heard of the console.

We all know the Wii had huge success in large part thanks to the chord it struck with ‘non-gamers’, so it’s amazing to see the Switch doing so well on the back of its popularity with ‘actual’ video game fans.

The fact the console launched with not just a Zelda game but what many people are calling the best Zelda game ever is no doubt a factor in its success with core gamers.

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers officially launches

Earlier this year at Nintendo’s reveal event for the Switch, the company surprised the gaming community by announcing a Switch exclusive remake for one of the most classic fighting games of all time… Yes, that’s right, Capcom has remade Street Fighter II…. again.

This time it’s labeled as “Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers.” Now, you might be asking yourself, how is this any different to “Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix” that launched in 2008 digitally for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360? Well, this is not just a port of HD remix, this is an entirely new remake with brand new content.

The Final Challengers has everything HD remix has plus new balance changes, updated graphics, two new characters (Evil Ryu and Violent Ken…) a new first person motion controlled game mode called “Way of the Hado,” and a in-game high quality art book. But, with this added content comes a price…. literally. The Final Challengers launched today for the Nintendo Switch at a price point of $40, while in 2008, HD Remix launched for $15-$20 depending on the console.

Do you think “Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers” is worth the increase in price? Why, or why not? And if so, will you be picking it up today? Let us know in the comments section below!
