The first DLC character for Arms, Max Brass, is out next week

The first free, yes free, DLC character for the refreshingly different Arms is out next week on the Nintendo Switch.

Takeaways:

  • The new update sees the evil Max Brass become a playable character – making that 11 fighters in total so far.
  • Those of you that have played Arms will know that Max Brass is already in the game – spoilers. You can play as him from the 12th of July.
  • Arms will receive regular free content to keeps things fresh from here on out. And you can’t argue with free can you?

The guy looks like he’s pretty unstoppable to us. We’re looking forward to trying him out next Wednesday! See you online Switchers.

eBay is now pulling listings for the SNES Mini – scalpers beware (again)

Just days after Amazon UK limited anyone who ordered multiple SNES Minis to one console each, eBay is now pulling listings in an attempt to combat the scalpers.

eBay SNES Mini
Seems fair…

Takeaways:

  • After SNES Mini pre-orders first went live in the UK, scalpers were quick to put the console on eBay at ridiculously inflated prices. The console costs £79.99 officially, but prices were hitting as high as £200.
  • It appears eBay is taking action though, with listings being pulled regularly.
  • An eBay representative has stated that pre-order items can only be listed on eBay if they’re available for postage within 30 days from the purchase date. The SNES Mini is released on the 29th September.

It’s great to see eBay now taking action as well, but will it be enough to stop the scalpers? They’ll still be able to put the consoles up on eBay from the 29th August onwards, for example. The ultimate solution is simple: more stock from Nintendo.

THQ Nordic is disappointed by the Switch’s power, believes it will replace the 3DS

THQ Nordic, formerly known as Nordic Games, has said they are disappointed by the Nintendo Switch’s overall power, and are struggling to run games on the system.

Takeaways:

  • In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Reinhard Pollice, business and product development director at THQ Nordic, said “It’s a bit sad that they haven’t gone out with a more beefy hardware.”
  • Pollice says that Battle Chasers, a 2D turn-based RPG game, is “a challenge to get running smoothly on Switch” while open-world sci-fi RPG Elex is “just too demanding right now.”
  • THQ Nordic also believes that the 3DS will be replaced completely by the Switch.

THQ Nordic clearly wanted the Switch to be more powerful than it is. Are you happy with the power of the console, or do you think Nintendo should have released it with better specs? Let us know in the comments below, if you please.

Assassin’s Creed anime announced with Adi Shankar at the helm

Adi Shankar, the creator of Netflix’s upcoming Castlevania, has announced his next project: it’s an Assassin’s Creed anime.

Takeaways:

  • The Assassin’s Creed anime was announced on Facebook, where Shankar revealed the series would tell “an original story”.
  • Shankar was surprised to have Ubisoft contact him, and “could never have imagined that one day”.
  • He finished by saying: “If anyone tells you not to follow your passion in life they are wrong.”

You can find the teaser trailer for Shankar’s Castlevania on Netflix below – it’s out this Friday, July 7th. Richard Armitage plays Trevor Belmont and Graham McTavish takes on the role of Dracula. Are you planning to watch it? Let us know in the comments below, if you please.

Amazon UK: If you ordered multiple SNES minis, you’ll now just get one – scalpers beware

To the chagrin of scalpers everywhere, Amazon UK is now limiting anyone who ordered multiple SNES minis to one console each.

Takeaways:

  • Amazon UK contacted customers this morning, via email, to say they had limited stock of the much sought-after SNES mini to just one console per customer:

jpg

  • As expected, the SNES mini has been extremely difficult to get hold of since its announcement on June 26th, with prices on eBay already double the original price of £79.99.
  • We’re not sure if Nintendo themselves has requested this new limit – is more stock on the way?
  • The SNES mini is set to launch in the UK on the 29th September with 21 games built into the system.

It’s good to see Amazon UK (and Nintendo?) put this limit in place so scalpers won’t as easily get to manipulate people who have a passion for something – why this limit wasn’t in place right away is another question, of course. Have you been lucky enough to order a SNES mini? Let us know in the comments below, if you please.

  • This will be the final Direct before Splatoon 2 launches on July 21st worldwide.

PlatinumGames opens official Japanese Twitter account – are they teasing Bayonetta 1 and 2 for the Switch?

PlatinumGames might be working on Bayonetta 1 and 2 for the Switch. The company have opened up an official Japanese Twitter account and are ‘teasing’ fans.

Takeaways:

  • The new Japanese Twitter account tweeted the image below and then promptly pinned the tweet to their page:
BAYONETTA Switch.jpg
Bayonetta on your Switch?
  • Bayonetta fans will know that red and blue are the main colours for game 1 and 2 respectively, but people are making the connection that these specific colours resemble the red and blue Joy-Cons of the Neon Switch.
  • PlatinumGames then liked and retweeted a tweet making the very same connection.
  • We know that Nintendo is considering more Wii U games for the Switch.
  • This could all amount to nothing, of course.

It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see the games come over to the Nintendo Switch, especially as there are quite a few people who never played the excellent second game in the series – exclusive to the ill-fated Wii U. Would you be interested in Bayonetta 1 and 2 for the Switch? Let us know in the comments below, if you please.

Dino Patti’s Somerville and new UK development studio announced

Why roll out one major company announcement when you’ve got two ready and raring to go? That’s seemingly the PR philosophy of Dino Patti, the ex-CEO of Inside developer Playdead who took the decision to explore industry pastures new earlier this year. Some months later, we’ve now learned both the name of Patti’s new UK-based development studio and their first full project in the space of a single week…

Takeaways:

  • Based in Guildford, UK, the indie studio Jumpship wants to “break perceived notions of what games can be by exploring the creative possibilities of the medium”, all while showcasing the medium’s potential “as a tool to question the human condition” and “rais[ing] entertainment to something deeply personal” along the way. Ambitious, eh?
  • As we speak via digitally coded blogging software, the Jumpship team is on the hunt for gameplay designers, generalist programmers, character controller programmers and character animators to assist with their debut title.
  • The title in question? Somerville, a sci-fi action adventure where players experience “the lives of key individuals in the wake of a global catastrophe”. To our knowledge said worldwide disaster wasn’t caused by any Presidents of the United States or EU referendums in the context of the narrative lore, but one can never be certain…
  • What does seem clearer, however, especially based on Somerville‘s premiere trailer (below), is the likelihood that the storyline will take at least partial inspiration from Denis Villeneuve’s hit 2016 big-screen sci-fi tale Arrival as skyscraper-rivalling behemothic UFOs take residence on Earth – albeit with considerably more hostile intentions if the war-torn skies which the trailer depicts are any indication.

No official release date has been set for Somerville what with the title presumably remaining in the early stages of production. That said, given how much of a seismic impact Patti’s previous efforts had on the industry – not to mention this writer, who’d gladly rank his Limbo and Inside playthroughs among the most entertaining in recent memory – expect this one to receive no shortage of attention between now and its eventual launch.

Until we know more, check out Somerville‘s promisingly stylish teaser trailer below…

GAME UK: Lack of Switch stock is the reason we’re having financial issues

UK retailer GAME is going through something of a tough time. Now they’ve blamed Nintendo, and the lack of Switch stock, for their weak financial results.

Takeaways:

  • GAME says demand for the Nintendo Switch has been “very strong” but the supply of the console has been lower than they expected.
  • They also state that there is a “continued softness” in their “core Xbox and PlayStation markets”.
  • The company has warned investors to expect another dismal set of financial results.
  • GAME’s stock plummeted by 30 per cent after its financial statement was made public.
  • They are still positive however, pinning their hopes to Red Dead Redemption 2, Xbox One X and more Switch stock.

GAME expecting more stock for the Switch is interesting considering the hybrid machine has beaten Nintendo’s own estimates as well. Is it really down to Nintendo? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, if you please.

XCOM 2 developer on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, “It was really cool to see”

When Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was first announced, gamers were quick to notice what series had inspired it. Yes, the mechanics of the excellent XCOM games could certainly be found in there somewhere… Well, it turns out the developers of that particular franchise are pretty happy about the whole thing.

Takeaways:

  • XCOM 2’s creative director, Jake Solomon, says he was very surprised and happy at the announcement, “It was really cool to see”.
  • Solomon checked out some gameplay with Luigi entering half cover and was left shocked, “What world am I in?”
  • On Nintendo and Ubisoft’s effort he said: “If they do something great, I’ll steal it… It’s going to generate more fans and it’s going to come up with new ideas.”
original.jpg
Who would have thought we’d see this?
  • Solomon says he owes his success to British game designer Julian Gollop, co-creator of the original X-COM franchise
  • The biggest surprise? The fact that Nintendo was willing to put a rocket launcher in Princess Peach’s hands in the first place: “If I had known we could have done that, I would have pitched that to Nintendo a long time ago,” Solomon said with a laugh.

They often say greatness inspires greatness. This writer is a big fan of both Mario and XCOM, so to see both of them coming together is quite brilliant indeed. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is coming to the Switch on August 29th – will you be picking it up? Let us know in the comments below, if you please.

SNES Classic Mini announced – Contains 21 games but no plug

We all knew this was going to happen. The SNES Classic Mini was always going to be released but we didn’t know when it would come or what games would come installed. That all changed as Nintendo gave us the details on the inevitable SNES Classic Mini (or Super Famicom Classic Mini, for our Japanese friends).

Takeaways:

  • The SNES Mini will have 21 games installed on it (see the list at the bottom of article) and will include the never released Starfox 2
  • For some reason, the EU edition will not contain a plug adapter for the USB-powered console. This is probably due to the many different plug types that exist within Europe but it’s annoying all the same
  • The mini-console will come with two controllers. The cables on these controllers will be 5 foot long – fixing one of the biggest problems with the NES Mini
  • Americans will have to make do with their awful looking purple/grey monstrosities whilst everyone else gets awesome looking rainbow coloured controllers. The way Nintendo intended
  • The Japanese edition has slightly different games, with 5 changes being made. The biggest thing we’re missing out on is Fire Emblem – as far as I’m concerned
  • There are more than 2 consoles being made, so people might be able to buy this thing in shops instead of getting scalped on eBay
Oh America. I weep for thee…

Who’s excited for this? I kind of am. The SNES was always my favourite console, probably because it had some great games and also because it came out in a time in my life where I literally had nothing else to do except play video games and complain about homework.

Here’s the list of 21 games I promised you earlier:

Games

  • Contra III The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III (AKA Final Fantasy IV – because Japan)
  • F-Zero
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link  to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox (AKA Starwing for us Euro peeps)
  • Star Fox 2 (Never released – must complete level 1 of Star Fox to unlock)
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting (…alpha omega tournament ultimate edition x Tekken)
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!!
The Japanese box art is infinitely cooler than the other offerings.

The SNES Class Mini will launch in September for $80 which is roughly £63. No official European pricing has been revealed.
