The UK lacks cyber skills, and letting kids play video games is the answer

Here’s an interesting one for you. Robert Hannigan, the former boss of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), has said that he thinks the UK lacks sufficient cyber skills and the answer is for kids to play video games. A civil servant said this. The people who regularly claim the pastime is evil etc… Let that sink in for a minute.

The crux of the matter is that the UK is in great need of computer scientists and engineers. Now Hannigan, in response, has warned against parents preventing their children from spending too much time online.

Here’s what he had to say:

Robert Hannigan
Robert Hannigan, Former Director GCHQ

“Gaming and social media can be as sociable as mooching around the streets with a group of friends. If you are spending a disproportionate amount of your holiday unsuccessfully attempting to separate your children from Wi-Fi or their digital devices, do not despair. Your poor parenting may be helping them and saving the country.”

Minus the whole “saving the country” drama and comedic tone, he’s right. There’s still somewhat of an unnecessary stigma attached to gaming here in the UK. Parents are constantly told to monitor their children to make sure they’re doing something ‘better’ with their time. Is it any wonder then, that the country seems to be falling behind in the digital race?

Hannigan goes on to say:

“Traditional methods will not solve this. There are many excellent computer science and engineering teachers, but not enough. Fortunately, today’s young people have become good at learning through seeing and doing online. They are teaching themselves in new ways.

It follows that the best thing we can do is to focus less on the time they spend on screens at home and more on the nature of the activity.”

It’s that last bit that’s perhaps the most important. Making sure the time spent online is valuable is the right answer. Pulling young people away, regardless of what they’re doing online, is not going to help the issue.

If they want to teach themselves, then let them. You never know, they may well be working on the next Minecraft.

All rise! Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney hits the 3DS in November

Remember that Korean game rating for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney that appeared for the 3DS a few months back? Well yeah, it kind of spilt the beans… The game is officially coming to the Nintendo 3DS this November.

Takeaways:

  • Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is coming to the 3DS via the Nintendo eShop for $19.99.
  • The better screens on the 3DS mean that everything looks a little crisper!
  • There’s now an option to quickly skip text even if you haven’t read it. Good for those that have played the game already.
  • It means that all six of the main Ace Attorney games will be available on the eShop, once Apollo Justice releases.
  • We don’t know the game’s exact release date in November yet.
  • You can choose between English and Japanese versions of the game, which also localises the game’s art, like so:

Apollo 1

Apollo 2

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is the fourth game in Capcom’s beloved lawyering series. It sees Apollo take over from the legendary Phoenix Wright who is now a disbarred defence attorney. It’s up to Apollo and Trucy Wright, Phoenix’s adopted daughter, to find out exactly why and how that happened.

It’s not the strongest entry in the series in this writer’s opinion, that award goes to the magnificent Trials and Tribulations, but it’s absolutely worth playing. We’ll bring you our updated ‘verdict’ this winter. Court is now adjourned!

Batman: The Telltale Series seems to be coming to the Nintendo Switch

It looks like the Nintendo Switch will be receiving another game from Telltale Studios after the release of Minecraft: Story Mode on the 22nd of this month. And, thanks to a leak, we think that game is going to be Batman: The Telltale Series. Let’s get you guys caught up.

Takeaways:

  • A listing from a French retailer’s website seems to have leaked the game. The listing can be seen here.
  • It has the game set to be released on October 9th. If that’s the case, then I would assume an official announcement from Telltale will be quite soon.
  • A price point of €34.99 is listed, this roughly translates to $39.99 in the US. This is usually the price point Telltale games launch at.
  • Additionally, this listing also revealed the box art. Which is the exact same as the other physical releases.
  • If this package is like the other console releases (there’s no indication if it’s any different,) then it will have all of the episodes for the first season.
  • Lastly, we don’t know if we’ll be seeing the newly released 2nd season of Batman: The Telltale Series on the Switch anytime soon.

What do you guys think of Telltale’s Batman finally coming to the Switch? Is it too late? Will you guys be willing to replay it again on the Switch? Let me know in the comments down below!

Metroid: Samus Returns gets tougher (and cuter) with new difficulty mode

First came console exclusives. Then came Day 1 DLC. Now Nintendo has found a whole new way to “gate off” craved gameplay elements, specifically those contained within the code of perhaps its most anticipated first-party portable production in years: the 3DS-only sci-fi adventure known best to rabid franchise fans as Metroid: Samus Returns.

Takeaways:

  • As with most of Nintendo’s recent Wii U, Switch and 3DS projects, the impending remake of beloved 1991 Game Boy side-scroller Return of Samus will boast Amiibo compatibility, with new plastic renditions of series protagonist Aran and her long-running gelatinous Metroid foes launching to celebrate the occasion.
  • There’s a catch, though. On top of granting Returns players the exclusive ability to hunt down and slaughter in-game Metroids aplenty by tapping the 3DS’ screen, the latter Amiibo will be a compulsory purchase for any brave souls hoping to tackle its campaign’s toughest difficulty setting, Fusion Mode.
  • Other Amiibo-exclusive features include an energy recharge function for Samus’ suit and a Metroid: Fusion-inspired costume with which to make the armoured bounty hunter resemble her GBA counterpart, both accessed via her own figure.

Predictably not everyone’s welcomed the news with the open arms that Nintendo and their co-developers MercurySteam would’ve probably hoped for, the prospect of paying a further £40 or more to own both Amiibos – and thus all bonus DLC – proving an enraging one for those hoping to access all content through the main game alone.

More than anything, though, it’s a sign of the times, what with Nintendo’s recent efforts to recoup its Wii U operating losses from last year via mobile products like Super Mario Run, the launch of their first ever Season Pass with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and now Returns’ Amiibo-locked gameplay features.

Will that harsh economic reality appease those long-running Metroid avids feeling betrayed by the change of tact this time around? Almost certainly not, but it’s worth bearing in mind the need for such concessions in order for Nintendo to keep producing its – usually critically acclaimed – software before marching on their offices with pitchforks and torches tonight.

Be sure to let us know your thoughts on this contentious announcement in the comments below, and don’t miss our continuing coverage of Samus Returns here at D-pad Joy ahead of its release exclusively on September 15th.

Resident Evil Revelations Collection heads to Nintendo Switch

Remember when Capcom said they would be taking the Switch more seriously due to its impressive sales numbers? Well, it seems like a bundle of Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2 might have been what they were talking about.

Takeaways:

  • Both Revelations games are coming to the Switch in a single bundle for $39.99. You can buy them seperately for $19.99 each.
  • All previous DLC for both games is included as unlockable content.
  • Access to Resident Evil Revelations 2 is via a download voucher. Boo!
  • RER Collection features an upgraded 1920×1080 resolution, an improved framerate, increased environmental detail and refined creature movement.
  • The Raid Mode for the first game includes “The Ghost Ship: Chaos”. It’s a new take on the stage, with more powerful weapons and remixed enemy placements.
  • The collection features four controller schemes based on control types from across the entire RE series.

Resident Evil: Revelations, just the first game, comes out on the 29th August on PS4 and Xbox One. A Switch release of both Resident Evil Revelations games comes out in late 2017. Is this the type of support Switch gamers wanted though? Probably not. RE7 would have been nice. Or how about RER 3? Maybe this is a test again…

The future of retro gaming is Candy Crush, Angry Birds, and Snake, according to new research

New research from games room specialist Liberty Games has revealed that Candy Crush, Angry Birds and Snake might replace Pac-Man, Mario, and Lemmings as the retro games of the future.

Takeaways:

  • Liberty Games polled 1,500 Britons to find out the future of retro gaming.
  • Candy Crush, Angry Birds, and Snake came out on top.
  • Nearly three-quarters of Britons now want their own arcade at home rather than going down to their local one – where exactly are the arcades anyway?

Here were the results of the poll:

  • Candy Crush – 51%
  • Angry Birds – 39%
  • Snake – 20%
  • Pokémon GO – 17%
  • Other – 18% (Including Clash Of Clans and Tetris)

LibertyGames-Content-IG-FutureRetroGaming-FinalFullGraphic-26.06.2017.jpg

Stuart Kerr, Technical Director at Liberty Games, said:

“Gaming has changed significantly since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Today, we have smartphones which have become integral to our lives. As well as keeping in touch with people, reading the news and sending emails, we play games on them, usually through an app.

“And while in yesteryear we’d head to our local arcade, today home games are popular, too – who hasn’t dreamed of having their own games room complete with pool tables and arcade machines?”

The data indicates that the most popular retro games of the future are set to be app-based as people shift towards mobile gaming. However, it’s also clear from these last few years that the dedicated games console business, as well as PC gaming, is still very much a thing. The demand for Crash Bandicoot in the UK, for example, is real.

What do you think the future of retro gaming will look like?

MCU-inspired worlds collide in LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 trailer

Riding on San Diego Comic-Con’s hype-fuelled wave, TT Games have ramped up the marketing for the sequel to 2013’s LEGO Marvel Superheroes a step further. The inventively-named LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 now lies only four months away and to celebrate we’ve gotten a new trailer focused on its main campaign’s central antagonist.

Takeaways:

  • Whereas the original instalment in this makeshift, brick-busting franchise of licensed platformers brought a band of classic Marvel Comics foes together to wage war on Earth’s mightiest heroes, this time around the Avengers must reunite to battle the near-omnipotent menace of Kang the Conqueror and his armada of alien invaders.
  • Judging by our first glimpses at Kang as he lays siege to Earth, transforming iconic Marvel locales from our world – not to mention time-zones such as the Old West and 2099 – into the tyrannical city of Chronopolis, he scarcely needs any back-up, overseeing the predictable carnage from his high-flying intergalactic cruiser.
  • The sequel’s narrative would naturally seem short-lived without some resistance from a protagonist or 100, however. Sure enough, we catch glimpses of a plethora of heroes like Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting back, with most closely resembling their big-screen Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts.
  • That said, new recruits are evidently along for the ride too, not least Spidey’s fan-favourite multiverse rival Spider-Gwen and – for those willing to shell out some extra cash for Superheroes 2’s newly-christened Deluxe Edition – the original Guardians roster, some of whom were recently teased in James Gunn’s Guardians Vol. 2.

Check out the full gameplay trailer in all its madcap, quite literally world-shattering glory for yourselves below. LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 assembles on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One – no word on an ‘enhanced for X’ version yet, however – and PC this November 14th.

Crash Trilogy is number one in UK charts again, takes it back from Final Fantasy 12 and beats Splatoon 2

It truly seems that there’s nothing that can stop the Bandicoot in the UK. He’s now secured the number one spot for three weeks and has even beaten Splatoon 2 to get there.

Takeaways:

  • The Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy has taken back the number one spot from Final Fantasy 12, which held it for a week.
  • Newcomer Splatoon 2 came in at number two, an impressive entry but not enough to stop Crash.
  • Splatoon 2 outperformed the first title, becoming the 3rd biggest Switch game launch behind giants Zelda and Mario.
  • Crash now matches The Last of Us: Remastered with the most weeks held at number one for a PS4-only title with 3 weeks. (Next week’s results could see it beat The Last of Us!).

The chance of us getting Crash Team Racing Remastered? I’d say it’s very high at this point with the success of the trilogy. Fans may finally get what they’ve been asking for.
