DLC is on its way to Fire Emblem Warriors – that’s Switch and 3DS

These days a game isn’t even released before some DLC is announced for it. That’s the case for Fire Emblem Warriors on Switch and New Nintendo 3DS – out on the 20th of October.

So without further ado, here’s all the new DLC that’s been announced for Warriors.

Fire Emblem Warriors DLC

Fire Emblem Warriors Season Pass (20th October, £17.99 / €19.99). The big one – the Season Pass will give players access to all three DLC packs as soon as they’re released. Each DLC pack will contain new playable characters and weapons for you to use.

As a bonus for purchasing the Season Pass now, for either the Nintendo Switch or New Nintendo 3DS, you’ll get a bridal costume for Lucina – see below!

Fire Emblem Fates DLC Pack (December 2017, £8.09 / €8.99): The content in this pack is inspired by Fire Emblem Fates. Expect some fan service here if you’re a Fates enthusiast.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon DLC Pack (February 2018, £8.09 / €8.99): Many of the characters and other items in this DLC are from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. If you’ve played the original, gold star for you!

Fire Emblem: Awakening DLC Pack (March 2018, £8.09 / €8.99): Fire Emblem: Awakening, the game that revived the entire series and made it a key IP for Nintendo, has some exclusive content coming. Rejoice!

More details about each DLC pack will be revealed in the future. We’d imagine, primarily, this will be about getting those much-requested characters in the game. Let’s just hope swordmaster Lon’qu makes it in there…

While we’re at it, don’t forget the limited edition bundle of the game too:  it’s got three CDs, with more than three hours of music, and 25 character art cards.

Oh, and Anna is back. She’s looking rather cool:

Attack on Titan 2 game

The Attack on Titan 2 game – formats revealed, news coming soon

The Attack on Titan 2 game is alive and kicking and we now know it’s coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam. So almost everything then.

Attack on Titan 2 Game: Omni-Directional Mobility Gear

The second game charges into the narrative of Attack on Titan’s second season, naturally, and offers new challenges with the improved “omni-directional mobility gear”, meaning advanced freedom of movement and targeting precision. Something fans will be well aware of from the anime series!

You’ll be able to try out new moves against the Titans as you control characters from a sizeable roster. Outside of battle, you can strengthen relationships with your comrades.

More information, including Attack on Titan 2’s anticipated release date (sometime early next year), is expected in the next few weeks.

As always, stay tuned.

The Dark Hunter

Materia Collective releases The Dark Hunter, a tribute album to Metroid

Materia Collective has released their next album called “The Dark Hunter”. It’s a progressive rock tribute dedicated to Nintendo’s Metroid franchise.

The Dark Hunter

The album features tracks from the superb Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, including renditions of the dark lair of Kraid, the jungles of Brinstar, the battle theme with Ridley, and of course the main theme from Prime. Oh yes!

Arranger and guitarist Ro Panuganti had this to say:

“The gripping atmosphere, exciting turns and twists, and of course the soundtrack from Super Metroid gave me chills. Creating The Dark Hunter was fulfilling my long-running dream of focusing on one theme, one sound, and one game series and making a solid album”

Panuganti says you’ll hear influences of modern progressive artists like Periphery, TesseracT, Plini, as well as more ’90s musicians like Pantera and Alice in Chains, who have found their way into the album.

You can check out a music video featuring the “Ridley” performance below:

For the rest of The Dark Hunter album, you can find that here.

NES Golf hidden within every single Switch – it’s a tribute to Satoru Iwata

An emulation of 1984’s NES Golf, along with added motion control support, is surprisingly hidden on every single Nintendo Switch.

NES Golf Switch: Directly To You

Hackers over at Switchbrew discovered something pretty special indeed. If the date on a Switch is set to July 11th, the day in which the late Satoru Iwata sadly passed away, and both Joy-Cons are then used in the “Directly” gesture that Iwata was famous for, NES Golf magically loads up onto the system.

Satoru Iwata

Upon activation, you can hear a sample of Iwata’s voice:

Unfortunately, this only works if your Switch has never been connected to the internet before…

Satoru Iwata’s Legacy

NES Golf was programmed by Iwata during his time with HAL Laboratory before he became president at Nintendo in 2000. Iwata was responsible for some of Nintendo’s greatest successes in the Wii and DS – both systems took the world by storm. Iwata also played a key role in the development of the Switch.

Gamers all over the world and the industry at large were shocked by Iwata’s sudden passing. Many, including this writer, became so accustomed to Iwata presenting Nintendo’s Direct series, that he became almost like a virtual friend to them.

It’s been speculated that this Switch tribute is, in fact, a form of “omamori” in Japanese culture – a charm that is traditionally available at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. It is said the omamori will protect you, or give you luck.

It’s a lovely and very Nintendo-like tribute to their former boss.

First trailer for the next Tomb Raider film out tomorrow

UPDATE – First trailer is here:

Brace yourself. We now have the first official Tomb Raider film poster, featuring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. Yes, there’s going to be another film… What do you mean you’re worried?

Video Game Adaptations, Ahem

The first trailer for the new film, based on the world-famous game series, of course, is out tomorrow. But for now, we’ve been treated to this poster:

Tomb Raider Film

As aforementioned, the film stars Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave), with Graham King (The Departed) producing.

It will also feature Dominic West (Money Monster, 300), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained) and Daniel Wu (AMC’s Into the Badlands).

The full synopsis can be found below:

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

It’s out next year on March 16th. Will it actually be any good? Probably not. That’s just the way almost all film video game adaptations are… Assassin’s Creed anyone? Sorry, no, let’s not forget Resident Evil either. Talking of Tomb Raider games

Gal*Gun 2

Gal*Gun 2 heading to Europe and North America next year – Shoot pheromones!

The time has come to “prepare your bodies” once again… Yep. Gal*Gun 2 is coming to Europe and North America early next year for PS4 and Switch.

The sequel to rail shooter Gal*Gun: Double Peace, the game features new characters and mechanics, including the ability to suck up demons with the trusty “Demon Sweeper”.

This is where you separate demons from the girls they’re possessing with a well-placed “pheromone shot”.

Gal*Gun 2: “Cutie Pies” Galore

Don’t fear, we’ve been informed there’s a brand-new story with new “cutie pies” to meet. The story of Gal*Gun 2 starts off with the demon-hunting angel Risu, who finds herself in a tough spot apparently.

Making things complicated for her are two new heroines: the “girl next door” Chiru, and your childhood friend Nanako.

You can see the first game in all its… glory… below:

Super Mario Odyssey’s file size is 5.7GB in total

Super Mario Odyssey will be a measly, yet at the same time impressive, 5.7GB in total. The final figure comes from Nintendo’s Japanese site who listed it on their store page.

This is a pertinent topic, especially as NBA 2K18 recently revealed that it requires 5GB for save data alone. That’s almost the whole of Mario Odyssey for a save file. Just so you know, that amount is for each individual save file too…

While the small file size of Odyssey may have some gamers worried about the lack of content in the game, it’s worth remembering that Nintendo has state of the art optimisation and compression techniques at their disposal. Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U came in at about 1.7GB, for example. And that was packed with content.

The Digital Storage Problem

But why are other developers finding it hard to get their file sizes down into a reasonable figure? Well, it’s pretty clear that no one knows hardware like the creators of said hardware, so there’ll be plenty of areas where Nintendo has a head start over everyone else.

However, more importantly, there’s also the limits of the Switch game card sizes themselves to consider, meaning developers, other than Nintendo, will start to rely on Switch owners having an SD card for extra data.

That’s a problem when we remember that the Nintendo Switch has just 32GB of internal storage. It now creates a situation in which an SD card is largely essential, rather than optional when downloading anything other than indie games onto the Switch system.

The saving grace here is that physical Switch game cards don’t require mandatory installs like other platforms, and SD cards are getting cheaper by the day.

Still, if you want a large digital library on the Switch, you’re definitely going to need that extra storage. For all the cleverness of the Switch, this feels like something Nintendo should have addressed before they got started.

Kingdom: New Lands is now available on Nintendo Switch

Kingdom: New Lands is out now on the Nintendo Switch. Get ready to rule!

This indie game was originally released in 2015 as Kingdom by Noio and Licorice (a two-man developer team) for PC on Steam. It was later ported to Xbox One and Android phones and reworked as Kingdom: New Lands.

Kingdom

Kingdom: New Lands

The core premise of the game: it’s a 2D pixel side-scroller kingdom simulator where you ride out on your trusty steed to collect coins, build, and defend your civilisation. The music is stunning too!

Here’s a closer look at the official launch trailer:

“Be brave, ruler, and fight to the bitter end, lest these New Lands conquer you instead”.

Kingdom: New Lands is out now on the Nintendo eShop in the UK for £13.49.

Kingdom: Two Crowns

If that wasn’t enough, the next game in the series, Kingdom: Two Crowns, is also coming to the Switch and PC in 2018. Here’s a sneak peek:

The sequel will be “utilizing Joy-Con [controllers] for a couch (or on the go) co-op experience that is perfect for monarchs who want help ridding their kingdom of greed”.

It’s always good to have extra things to look forward to!

Some new Super Mario Odyssey screenshots have been released for us to take a gander at. We’d imagine this is the last big media blowout before the game’s release next month, although we know the official website will continue to drop tidbits here and there. You’ll recognise some of the locations that appeared in the Nintendo Direct on Wednesday.

And yes, that is a Tyrannosaurus rex with Mario’s hat on top of it.

Super Mario Odyssey: Switch bundle revealed, Koizumi, more!

Super Mario Odyssey looks like it packs three games into one with the amount of content on offer. That was the impression the new showing of the game left us with from Nintendo’s Direct.

Oh, let’s do the Odyssey

Presented by the playful Yoshiaki Koizumi, the producer of Super Mario Odyssey, we were treated to new Kingdoms, more Power Moons than you can shake a stick at, a hint system, minigames with online rankings, and new outfits for Mario.

You can customise your ship, the Odyssey, to your heart’s desire too, while a Snapshot Mode allows you to take pictures of your adventure and then do all sorts of fancy effects with them. You can even post these snaps to social media or use them as wallpapers – if you’d like.

Super Mario Odyssey

There’s also a Super Mario Odyssey Switch bundle launching on the same day as the game. It includes red Joy-Con controllers, naturally, a carrying case and a download of the game:

Super Mario Odyssey

More information will be revealed on the official site, (and on Twitter), while the game’s release date draws closer. Is it Super Mario Galaxy-beating stuff? We’ll see.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that Koizumi presents very much in the way the late Satoru Iwata did. He seems like a confident and natural choice to lead the Directs in the foreseeable future. Maybe that’s the intention!

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 release date

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 release date: December 1st on your Switch

It finally happened: the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 release date was announced during the Nintendo Direct today. The game is available on December 1st, 2017, yes, 2017 – just in time for the festive season. Epic.

This Is the Monado’s Power

Here’s the new trailer in case you missed Nintendo’s Direct (or if your internet couldn’t take the strain during the presentation. Like mine.).

And here’s a few extra goodies you know you want. The special edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 includes:

  • A sound selection CD

  • A fancy, 220-page art book

Oh, and this is the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller – Xenoblade 2 Edition. Basically, the best edition we’ve seen of it so far:
