New MMORPG Ember Sword Looks To Redefine The Genre

Own your share of land and help create an engaging online world where the players choose how it evolves in Ember Sword.

So Couch Studios wants to make their upcoming MMO an experience where the players aren’t pushed towards the money-grubbing industry standards of loot boxes and pay-to-win practices. Instead, they’re set on creating a world for the players to interact, purchase, control and build upon without the use of tacky microtransactions.

Along with the announcement, So Couch Studios released a short teaser trailer which can be viewed below:

Ember Sword is an online world where players may purchase – through a player-driven economy – a plat of land and inhabit it as they please, as well as engage in thrilling PvP, PvE or explore the open world.

“Most free-to-play MMORPGs monetize through pay-to-win mechanics and non-transferable cosmetics in an attempt to increase revenue by locking down the cash shop economy. With Ember Sword, we’re putting players in charge of evolving the world and its economy instead…” – Mark Phillipe Laursen, So Couch Studios founder

A Real-Life Economy In Ember Sword

We’ve received a few pieces of info about the forthcoming “genre-defining” MMORPG with the recent announcement, so here’s everything we know, so far:

  • Ember Sword utilizes its own player-driven economy through optional monthly subscription and marketplace fees.
  • With a real economy run by the Etherum Blockchain, players will own actual pieces of land and have the will to place various enemies, NPCs and resources invested in the world.
  • Fight in the face of danger in the open-world or hide in the shade as an undisturbed forager, the decision is yours.
  • The game will be available on PC both as a browser title and on various desktop clients. There are plans to release Ember Sword on mobile devices in the future, as well.
  • Rare cosmetic items will be rewarded to players who discover them by completing activities, as opposed to the dreaded loot box.

Ember Sword will release as a completely free-to-play MMORPG where players earn PIXEL tokens to sell and trade at their disposal.

As of now, there’s no official release date for Ember Sword, which is being developed for cross-platform play on PC, and a planned mobile release.
