Little Nightmares is being adapted for TV

Remember how I said that I didn’t see the DLC of Little Nightmares coming? Scratch that. I didn’t see THIS coming. Holy… Moly.

According to Hollywood ReporterLittle Nightmares is now going to be adapted for television, after mere months of its release.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the guys behind Captain America: Civil War and Winter Soldier, will be teaming up with Henry Selick, the man who directed Nightmare Before Christmas, to create the TV adaptation of Little Nightmares. Yeah, this is kind of a big deal.

Little Nightmares is a horror adventure game where you play as the character Six, exploring the darkness of The Maw, and the monsters that live within.

You can read our review of the game here, and/or watch the chilling trailer down below. I’ll just go and lie-down.

Super Mario Odyssey hits the Switch on October 27th

Mamma mia indeed! The bizarre, (yet probably brilliant) Super Mario Odyssey is coming to the Nintendo Switch on October 27th – much earlier than anyone expected.

Screen_Shot_2017_01_12_at_11.37.08_PM

Nintendo announced the final release date for the game at their E3 Spotlight presentation today. We also saw Bowser and his plans to marry Peach – surely the ultimate insult to Mario – along with the Italian plumber exploring many new beautiful worlds in search for the all-powerful ‘Moons’.

You can catch the delightful trailer below:

E3 2017: Metroid: Samus Returns announced for the 3DS

Yes, that’s right. Nintendo is doubling up on Metroid this year at E3. First, with the announcement of Metroid Prime 4, and now ‘Metroid: Samus Returns’ for the 3DS. The game is being developed Mercury Stream, who just last year denied the rumor that they were working on a Metroid game.

This iteration of the long time fan favorite series is a reworked version of the classic “Metroid 2: Return of Samus.” No, it’s not just a simple port, it’s a re-imagining of the classic game. The new features will include upgraded visuals, range of motion and bonus abilities.

Metroid: Samus Returns will launch on September 15th for the 3DS family of consoles. A special edition was also announced that comes with the game and a CD soundtrack.

What do you guys think of this 2D Metroid? Are you going to be picking it up? Or are you just going to wait for Metroid Prime 4?

E3 2017: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions announced for 3DS

Update: Coming October 6th

A remake of the first ever Mario & Luigi is coming to the 3DS. Nintendo decided to randomly announce the news at their Treehouse event, after the main E3 Spotlight conference. (Didn’t see that coming!).

The remake of the GBA game, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions, will feature enhanced graphics and a new mode.

Taster: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Epic sci-fi action on your Switch this Xmas

It was the return of Reggie Fils-Aimé at Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight show, who quite magically entered the stage, that hyped our anticipation of what to expect this year.

He excitedly began:

Fun and battle always lock together

Reggie talked about gaming as a journey and a ‘passport to new worlds’. This nicely tied into some stunning footage from Monolith Soft’s epic new game Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

This writer instantly recognised the distinct, beautiful and ethereal sound from Xenoblade Chronicle’s composers: Yasnori Mitsuda, ACE (Tomori Kudo and Hiroyo ‘Chico’ Yamanaka), Kenji Hiramatsu, and Manami Kiyota who have returned to compose the game’s soundtrack. Yasnori Matisuda has stated that, upon completing the soundtrack, it brought him to tears. We can hope that there’s a deluxe version of Xenoblade 2 which includes the music, fingers crossed…

From the trailer we can hear that the voice actors are British (again!) and Australian, which is always nice to see in a massive Japanese sci-fi RPG (and given that D-pad Joy is a UK site, it feels closer to home).

Xenoblade 2 follows the main character Rex on a quest to find Elysium. Here’s Nintendo’s blurb:

Explore an endless ocean of clouds, where the last remnants of civilization live on the backs of colossal beasts called Titans. Experience the story of Rex and his new friend, Pyra, a mysterious being known as a Blade who grants him tremendous power. Together, search for Pyra’s long lost home Elysium, the ultimate paradise for all of humanity.

The visuals look clean with the change to a more Chibi art style (in manga and anime, these are child-like cutesy versions of characters).

Narrative wise, we can expect that they’ll follow on in this game with some humorous moments, contrasting heavily with very serious emotional scenes that drive the characters forward. No doubt they’ll throw in a lot of unexpected twists into the story too!

We’ll be able to play in many different ways: with the Joy-Cons or with the Pro controller, away and at home – so this will be very unique when experiencing a huge RPG like Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Unexpectedly announced for Holiday 2017 (which is sooner than we anticipated and just in time for Christmas), Xenoblade 2 will no doubt provide hundreds of hours of gameplay.

Are you surprised about the announcement and the release date? Will you be buying Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

E3 2017: Metroid Prime 4 is coming to Nintendo Switch, no this isn’t a rumour

Surprise! Metroid Prime 4 has been confirmed to be in development for the Switch at Nintendo’s E3 ‘Spotlight’ presentation.

We don’t know any other details at this time, but we’ll be lucky to see this one released before late next year, (at the very least). This writer believes this will be the first in a new trilogy as well. It’s definitely a sign that Nintendo has been listening to its fans who have been clamouring for a new game in the series for many years.

You can catch the first look below. Are you happy with Nintendo’s best kept secret?

E3 2017: Terry Crews joins Crackdown 3, coming November 7th

Crackdown 3 has been rumoured to be in development hell for the past few years – well it looks like that was just a rumour after all! At Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Sumo Digital released a new trailer for Crackdown 3 featuring the one and only Terry Crews.

The new trailer not only showed us new gameplay and features that weren’t shown before, but also revealed that Crackdown 3 releases on the same day as the Xbox One X – November 7th.

Even though the release date surprised us, the footage they showed looked somewhat concerning; it seemed to be missing all of the cloud computing destruction that the developers promised at the games first reveal a couple of years back…

Well, its time to put those concerns to rest, Crackdown 3 will still have all of the high scale destruction as promised in the multiplayer modes. The single player on the other hand will be a different experience all together. This all comes from design director Clint Bundrick who said:

Our competitive multiplayer experience has the cloud computing that gives you the 100% destructibility. Destruction is still very much a part of Crackdown 3 and we will be revealing more at a later date.

A few other big notes about Crackdown 3:

  • It will run at 4K 30fps for the Xbox One X
  • The single player and multiplayer modes will have different levels of destruction
  • They are promising the return of the crazy narrator and the addicting orb collecting

What do you guys think about Crackdown 3? Are you guys surprised it’s actually coming out? Will you be picking it up on November 7th? Why or why not?

Viewpoint: After a slightly dull E3, what if PS5 launched in 2018?

An air of uncertainty seems to be building in the games industry. We’ve seen Microsoft reveal their Xbox One X, giving us an insight into their plans for the future. But that only brought about more questions than it did answers for many, one such question being how long can we expect our ‘normal’ consoles to last? More pertinently; what are Sony’s plans and can we expect to see a PlayStation 5 any time soon?

My initial reaction to the latter question would be no, but when you think about it a little more it doesn’t seem that farfetched. Inevitably the Xbox One X will unsettle Sony somewhat as, based on specs alone, it’s a much better proposition than its counterpart; the PS4 Pro. Sony were the first to offer their 4K capable version of the latest consoles, with Microsoft taking somewhat of a backseat before showing their hand. Maybe this was a lesson learned from the launch of the Xbox One or a tactical ‘Let’s wait and see what they do’ approach.

Sony find themselves in a tricky situation here as they will want to stand by PS4 Pro and the PS4 itself for as long as possible, giving consumers justification their money was well spent. By the same token though, they will want to compete with Microsoft and give their fans the best experience they can. So do they stick to their guns or look to out-muscle Microsoft by kick starting a new generation of consoles? If you think about it, PS4 will be five years old in 2018 so some people might be getting twitchy thumbs.

It’s a fine balance that needs to be struck by Sony as the appeal of home consoles is to not have to upgrade or buy new hardware for as long as possible without feeling outdated. On the flipside, both Sony and Microsoft seem to think the future of console gaming lies in progressive upgrades rather than new consoles altogether so their next step would need to be a considered one.

All said and done, new shiny hardware is an enticing prospect and there’s always a thrilling buzz surrounding a new console launch which people get caught up in. In order for that to be achieved though this needs to be a launch timed correctly otherwise it could fail before it even launches. The difficulty here being, if PS5 launched in 2018, how much longer would PS4 be supported? New hardware can’t be held back by the limitations of the previous console, but owners of the previous machine can’t suffer from not having a machine that gives them the latest and best titles. Imagine PlayStation owners being told that the Last of Us 2 is coming out but only for PS5 and won’t run on PS4. I don’t think that would go down very well.

But if this meant that Sony stayed in front of the pack, would this be a risk worth taking? They were considered to be the winners of this generation cycle so would their best bet to be at the forefront of the next wave of consoles in order to keep their dominant title? Only they can make that call but the success of a console ultimately lies in the availability of games and their quality so they wouldn’t want multi-platform titles running better on a rival console. Nor would they want their exclusives to be held back due to hardware constraints.

Whichever way you look at it, you can see both pro’s and con’s for both sides of the argument so it’s a debate which will divide the opinions of many. Personally, I don’t think we’ll see PS5 launch next year and I don’t think we’ll see typical console generations anymore. I think we will start to see slightly upgraded versions available every few years, much like the Xbox One X, giving us more power for bigger and better titles.

If Sony are happy that PS4 and the Pro are enough to keep them afloat, then they must be confident in their upcoming catalogue of titles, such as God of War 4, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Days Gone to name a few.

What do you think dear reader? Is it time to bring out the PS5, or is it way too early. Let us know in the comments below!

E3 2017: God of War 4’s new trailer shows a father and son bonding in extreme situations

The impressive looking God of War 4 was shown off during Sony’s E3 conference in a new trailer today.

The father and son adventure sees Kratos struggle to master his rage while trying to raise his son Atreus and teach him how to survive the dangerous world they both find themselves in.

God of War hits the PS4 and PS4 Pro in early 2018. Are you looking forward to playing Sony’s latest blockbuster?

Viewpoint: I predict that Transference will be a mindf**k of a game

TVs within TVs, within TVs, within TV… Where do I begin? Transference is a new IP that was announced at Ubisoft’s E3 conference. It’s all about immersion and pushing the boundaries of storytelling:

You can for the first time as a player feel like you are in a movie. That’s a really good word for it, we want you to take the gear and still feel unsettled.[…]

Transference was produced by Elijah Wood’s team at SpectreVision. Here’s what they had to say:

We stumbled across some fascinating research that had begun in the late 90’s. Essentially, neuroscientists had figured out a way to upload brain data, trauma, emotions memories to digital space. Now we’ve gone and taken the next logical step, and with Ubisoft, we’ve created in virtual reality one such test subject. So we’d like you to come join us and experience the Walter Test Case for yourself.

The trailer instantly reminds me of The Matrix, with Master Reboot’s narrative (but in an everyday setting) and a slice of Black Mirror for good measure. Transference to me looks more scary than any sci-fi thriller/ horror game I’ve played as it sounds (we didn’t see much gameplay, they kept their cards close) unnerving and uncanny – I predict that it will be a mindf**k of a game and an experience to remember (especially as it’s for VR!).

According to the E3 announcement we can expect the mysterious game to come out Spring 2018.

What are your thoughts – is the idea of the game too scary? Or like me, can you simply not wait?
